How to remit sales tax in Illinois
There are two main ways to remit sales tax in Illinois:
- Online: You can file and pay your Illinois sales tax return online through MyTax Illinois. To do this, you will need to create an account and register for a sales tax permit. Once you have registered, you can log in to your account and file your return. You can pay your sales tax liability online with a credit card, debit card, or electronic check.
- By mail: You can also file and pay your Illinois sales tax return by mail. To do this, you will need to complete Form ST-1, Illinois Sales Tax Return. You can download Form ST-1 from the Illinois Department of Revenue website. Once you have completed the form, you can mail it to the Illinois Department of Revenue with a check or money order for your sales tax liability.
If you are filing your sales tax return by mail, it is important to allow enough time for the Illinois Department of Revenue to process your return and payment. The Illinois Department of Revenue recommends that you mail your return and payment at least two weeks before the due date.
The due date for your Illinois sales tax return depends on your filing frequency. If you are filing monthly, your sales tax return is due on the 20th of the month following the reporting period. If you are filing quarterly, your sales tax return is due on the 20th of the month following the end of the quarter. If you are filing annually, your sales tax return is due on the 20th of April.
